The Proper Role of Government
We must always be vigilant to keep liberty alive…
United States Declaration of Independence. “…and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are … liberty…”
History has shown that the tendency of governments is to grow. While governments obviously have a proper role in restraining evil and maintaining order, we must be vigilant to guard against government’s steady creep into areas where its action is unwarranted or even unconstitutional. Excessive regulation is a threat to liberty. More importantly, we must ensure that the government does not interfere or compete with mankind’s other great institutions: the family and the church. Put another way, we must recognize that the government cannot be the answer to every issue. I still hold that individual liberty is preferable to government intervention unless absolutely necessary.
